CBC listeners may recall the segment on Mainstreet: 'Tales of Willowshade Farm' by Betty Howatt. The Howatts have a long history in the community. The first Howatts settled in Tryon in 1783. The larger farmhouse dates back to the early 1800s. In 1920, following Everett King Howatt's return from war, the family built another home across the road they affectionately named 'Perfection.' It was built by local carpenter, Ed Sharkey, who was responsible for building many of the homes in the area.
